Embroidery:

Decorative needlework. Running stitches are healing, kinetic, and repetitive motion by our hands.

The front of this embroidery shows what I want people to see and know about my person; the back is full of the threads and knots and snags that hold the very person I am together. Stitches are my sutures.

The Healing Rhythm of Handwork:

The Use of Textiles in Expressive Arts Therapy

The use of artistic forms such as embroidery, weaving, knitting, crochet, quilting, and sewing to re-stitch the lives of victims of trauma creates a threaded narrative in trauma-informed expressive arts therapies. Via handwork, the beauty of repetitive motion with our hands and the experience of touching, manipulating, and guiding highly textured, albeit soft materials, assist in the safe externalization of embodied trauma.
